Amid the atmosphere of political instability in Brazil, president Michel Temer, who took office after Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment, launched a scathing attack on EBC (Empresa Brasil de Comunicação), considered the heart of public communication in Brazil. Through a Provisional Measure, published on September 2nd, the government that took office after Ms. Rousseff’s impeachment changed EBC’s foundation law and removed the main pillars that guaranteed EBC’s public nature, which is not to be governmental. With a single act, the new government eliminated: – The four-year mandate for EBC’s president, a tool that assured the company’s autonomy from any government; – The Board of Trustees, a deliberative body that had, among its duties, the role of ensuring EBC’s public nature and promoting social participation in the management of public companies. The Board of Trustees was composed of 22 members – 15 of which were representatives of society. Under the new law, the Board of Trustees holds the exclusive right to dismiss EBC’s president.
